Molly McDonald Named C-USA Setter of the Week

Senior honored for the first time; only setter ever chosen from Charlotte by C-USA.

Oct. 18, 2004

Irving, Texas - Charlotte senior Molly McDonald collected her first-ever Setter of the Week accolade as she led the 49ers volleyball team to a come-from-behind, five-game win against Saint Louis on Friday night. The award was announced by the Conference USA office on Monday.

McDonald (Santa Cruz, Calif.) totaled 112 assists in two conference matches last week, including a career high-tying 69 in the conference win against Saint Louis. She helped her squad hit a combined .374 over the last three games, including .571 (10 for 14) in the decisive game five. McDonald averaged 14.0 assists per game across the two matches, while adding nine digs and four block assists on the week.

"In the St. Louis match, that was probably the biggest indicator of why Molly won this award," head coach Lisa Marston said. "It was a do-or-die match for us, and she changed her game plan to find the people who were scoring for her. Molly stuck with what worked to get us the leads, especially in turning the match around in game three."

McDonald's selection marks the first time C-USA has ever honored a Charlotte setter.

McDonald raised her average to 12.17 assists per game this season, including 12.43 per game in Conference USA play. The 6-foot-tall setter is second on the team in blocks (50) and blocks per game (0.60) in 2004.

McDonald ranks fourth on Charlotte's all-time assists list, but is currently on pace to finish her career in third place. She holds two of the 49ers' top ten all-time single-season assist totals.

On the week, Charlotte (15-8) split a pair of conference matches on the road with a win against the Billikens and a loss to league co-leader Memphis on Saturday. The team will play three home matches this week, beginning with a non-conference tilt against Radford on Tuesday night. Charlotte hosts conference matches on Friday and Saturday nights at Halton Arena. All matches start at 7:00 pm.
