Lisa Newell Picks Up Atlantic 10 Player of the Week Award

Senior led 49ers to 3-0 week, pair of A-10 victories

Oct. 3, 2005

Philadelphia - Charlotte 49ers senior middle blocker Lisa Newell (Merillville, Ind./Merrillville HS) was chosen as the Atlantic 10 Conference's volleyball Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.

It was the first Player of the Week award for Newell in her career.

She led Charlotte to a perfect 3-0 record last week, including a pair of Atlantic 10 wins over East Division rivals Temple and La Salle. Newell has moved into 10th among the league's leaders in points per game this season (3.98) and is just outside the top 10 in kills per game.

Newell began the week by hitting .722 with 14 kills at non-conference opponent Elon. On Friday night at Halton Arena, the senior notched a career-best 24 kills on .439 hitting to lead the 49ers past preseason division favorite Temple. Newell added three service aces and 10 blocks (2 solo, 8 assisted) to lead the 49ers with 33 total points in the match.

Newell closed out the week with eight kills and no errors in a sweep of La Salle on Sunday.

In the three matches, she hit an exemplary .476 while averaging 4.18 kills per game. She added 16 blocks (1.45 per game) and averaged 5.36 points.

Newell joins teammate Alma Arroyo, who earned A-10 Player of the Week honors on Sept. 19. The 49ers are one of two teams to have won two Player of the Week awards this season, and the only program to have two different players earn that distinction.

Charlotte hosts A-10 foes Duquesne (Friday, Oct. 7) and Saint Louis (Sunday,Oct. 9) this weekend.
