MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Charlotte 49ers volleyball team was defeated in both of its matches on the final day of Minnesota's Diet Coke Classic. After falling to No. 22 Minnesota in the first match, 3-0, Charlotte lost to Colorado State, 3-0, to close out the weekend.
In the first match, Minnesota (6-5) turned to Cassie Busse, who accounted for 24.5 points on 19 kills, three service aces, a pair of solo blocks and a block assist. Jessica Byrnes also scored in double figures, tallying 13 points on 12 kills and two block assists. Abbey Szlanfucht led Charlotte (5-9) with 12 points. She knocked down 10 kills, dropped in an ace and recorded two block assists.
The Golden Gophers took a 1-0 lead in the match early, taking a 30-18 decision in game one. Even though they went on to sweep the 49ers, the second and third games were much closer. In game two, Minnesota held on to win 30-26, then clinched the match with a 30-25 win in game three.
The 49ers return to action Tuesday, when they host cross-county rival Davidson at 7:00. Next weekend, the team travels to College of Charleston and Coastal Carolina.
