CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Courtney Burg and Chanda Waller combined for 32 kills to lead the Charlotte 49ers volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Columbia Friday night at Halton Arena. It was the team's first match in the SpringHill Suites Classic.
Charlotte (6-5) had four players finish with more than 10 kills. Burg and Waller had 16 each, while Lisa Newell knocked down 13 and Jessica Kelly had 12 in a reserve role. Holly Kreyling continued her strong play, racking up nine kills and eight digs to go along with a career-high six service aces. Madia Willis, Kathy Lavold and Katie Beauregard had 13 kills each for Columbia (4-3).
The 49ers were challenged early, swapping the lead with the Lions throughout the first two games. Columbia pulled out a 31-29 win in game one to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Niners finished in front 30-28 in game two to even the match. Charlotte went on to take the third and fourth games, 30-18 and 30-20.
In earlier action on Friday, Xavier defeated Colgate 3-0. Game scores were 30-21, 30-14 and 30-7.
The 49ers return to action at 1:30 Saturday versus Colgate. Then tomorrow evening, the team wraps up the weekend against Xavier at 7:30. Admission for all matches is $3 for adults. Youth 17-and-under and university students will be admitted gratis.
