Charlotte Volleyball Prepares for Opening Weekend of Competition in Durham

Niner Netters Name Tri-Captains in Preparation for Tournament at NCCU

Aug. 28, 2008

Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers Volleyball squad heads out of fall preseason practice and into match preparation for the season-opening tournament this weekend at North Carolina Central in Durham.

Head Coach Chris Redding said that balance on offense and team leaders were two aspects that the team continued to focus on since the spring and into the fall.

"We have emphasized the role of our two seniors (Courtney Cowles and Carly Romberg) since the spring," noted Redding. "Those two, along with junior Kaitlin Knight, are managing the team brilliantly."

It became no surprise that Cowles, Romberg and Knight were named tri-captains this week.

The seniors from last year's squad garnered more than half of the team's kills, creating some holes to fill offensively.

"We'll have three new starters on the floor and we talk about players playing different roles," said Redding. "We have left competition open at several positions and we don't want to lock into something and miss a better option. For us to get better all season, we'll have to shift and move people around."

Charlotte finished 15-13 in 2007, its fourth-straight winning season and the third time a first-year head coach for Charlotte volleyball posted a winning record.

This season's squad features seven returners and three freshmen and begins with a weekend tournament in Durham, N.C., hosted by North Carolina Central University, a first-year Division I volleyball program.

Charlotte takes on Houston Baptist at 3 p.m. Friday, Campbell Saturday at 9 a.m. and host NCCU Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.

The Niners open the home season in Halton Arena with the Comfort Suites 49er Tournament the following weekend, September 5-6 with opponents Howard, Norfolk State and Youngstown State.
