Volleyball Wraps Spring Season; 2004 Awards Announced

Kreyling, McDonald and Szlanfucht win team awards

May 13, 2005

Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers announced their 2004 season award winners at the 26th Annual Yellow Book All-Sports Banquet. The all-sports ceremoney recognized the most valuable players from each team and highlighted the team and individual achievements from the fall season.

First, head coach Lisa Marston and her team were recognized for spearheading the Conference USA Dig for the Cure program, which raised over $22,000 for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The 49ers, whose efforts were profiled on Fox Charlotte as well as in the Charlotte Observer and on CollegeSports.com, got every C-USA volleyball program involved in the fundraising effort to raise awareness of Breast Cancer and funds for the Komen Foundation.

The volleyball Coach's Award, presented to the player that best exhibits the characteristics that all coaches look for (namely teamwork, work ethic, enthusiasm and leadership), was given to senior Holly Kreyling.

"Holly is the epitome of the Coach's Award," said Marston. "I'm very proud of her, and I can't say how much I have enjoyed coaching her. She is a very versitile player, very coachable, and willing to do whatever was asked of her. She went from playing the middle to finishing her career at the libero position, and you don't find that in too many players. Kudos to her."

Kreyling finished her career ninth on the school's career digs list with 1,145, and tied for the sixth-best single-season mark with 434 last fall.

Volleyball chose to name co-MVP's, giving awards to the potent offensive tandem of senior setter Molly McDonald and outside hitter Abbey Szlanfucht.

"Molly won the Conference USA Setter of the Week awards back-to-back, and she has just really improved so much in her four years at Charlotte," said Coach Marston. "It was a joy to coach her, and I'm so happy that she was able to achieve MVP status as a senior."

McDonald finished her four-year career with the 49ers in third place on the career assists list with 4,169, and in 2004 she recorded the second-highest single-season total in school history (1,494).

Szlanfucht was an outstanding two-way player for the 49ers last fall, and was the only player in Conference USA to rank among the league's top ten in points, kills, and digs. No other player appeared on even two of those lists. Entering her senior season in 2005, Szlanfucht is ninth in career kills and is poised to break into the all-time top ten in digs.

"Even though Abbey had competition on the outside, she always proved herself to be extremely valuable because she did so much for us," said Coach Marston. "She was our leading defensive player, a primary passer, and was out outlet hitter regardless of where she was on the floor. She did so much for us and deserves to be co-MVP."

The 49ers recently wrapped up their 2005 spring season at the Davidson Tournament. Charlotte won three of four matches at the event, with decisions over Mercer, Winthrop, and Davidson. They fell to Virginia in three games.

Overall this spring the team has scored impressive wins over Wake Forest, Winthrop (twice), Mercer, Davidson, and Elon. The team split with North Carolina and East Carolina, and lost to College of Charleston, Virginia, and Duke.

The 49ers will enter the Atlantic 10 Conference in the fall. Check out the schedule on this site and reserve the dates to see this team in 2005.
