NCAA Honors Charlotte Volleyball For Excellence in Academic Progress

Niners Netters Among Department Outpacing Campus Academic Averages

April 25, 2008

Indianapolis, Ind. - Charlotte Volleyball is listed among teams honored nationwide for academic progress by the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The Academic Progress Rate, or APR, is a measurement utilized by the NCAA to track a team's progress of its athletes remaining eligible, retaining players and graduating.

"Our program is honored to be recognized for APR excellence," said Niners head coach Chris Redding. "This recognition is based on the hard work and dedication of our student-athletes in the classroom over the last three years and shows our program's focus of being successful both on the court and in the classroom."

According to the NCAA, the APR provides a real-time "snapshot" of a team's academic success each semester by looking at current academic progress of every student-athlete.

Each Division I sports team receives an APR score on a thousand-point scale. An APR of 925 equals roughly a 60 percent Graduation Success Rate.

High-performing teams, such as Charlotte's Volleyball program, receive public recognition from the NCAA. Charlotte volleyball received a score of 995.

"I have had the pleasure of working with the volleyball program for the last six years," said Mark Verburg, Assistant Director in the Athletic Academic Center and volleyball's academic advisor. "This award evidenced they have consistently recruited and retained high-quality women who have exemplified the term student-athlete. This is not a one-year award. It shows the priority that Charlotte Volleyball has put on academics and graduation for years and that hasn't changed under Coach Redding's watch."

According to NCAA guidelines, student-athletes entering college are required to complete 40 percent of their degree by the end of their second year, 60 percent by the end of year three, and 80 percent by the end of year four. All student-athletes must earn a minimum of six hours per semester (or quarter) in order to remain eligible the next semester.

The athletic department as a whole outpaced the university GPA for the 24th straight semester in the fall of 2007, including a record 3.05 GPA for all teams combined.

21 student-athletes had a perfect 4.0 GPA last fall, a total 75 student-Athletes posted a GPA of 3.5 or better in that semester, and the list of student-athletes with a 3.0 or better in the previous semester totals 168. Nine of Charlotte's 11 volleyball players appeared on an academic honor list, including three with a 3.8 or higher and one on the perfect 4.0 list. Charlotte's Alma Arroyo was the 2007 Atlantic 10 Volleyball Student-Athlete of the Year.

One hundred and twenty-five student-athletes posted GPA's of 3.0 or higher during the spring semester of 2007, with 23 having perfect 4.0 GPAs. Volleyball also led the way in Life Skills, That program, which involves required participation from all student-athletes, involves attending a number of various seminars, workshops and lectures, usually held on campus. The program also involves community service projects in and around the Charlotte area like, blood drives, spending time with children at community centers and children's hospitals and raising money for causes such as cancer research.

On the court, Charlotte has posted a 52-41 record in the past three seasons, including a 20-win season in 2006 and a pair of trips to the Atlantic 10 Tournament. The Niners have placed ten players on various All-Atlantic 10 lists in that span.
