The 49ers Remember Miller
Coach Marston's Comments
Togetherness
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The university community gathered, March 22, for a memorial service to honor the life of Charlotte volleyball player Danielle Miller. More than 300 friends, teammates and fans attended the service, which was held at the Barnhardt Student Activity Center.
A sophomore from Woodstock, Ill., Miller was killed in Tampa, Fla., March 12. She was in Florida for Spring Break, when the vehicle she was traveling in drifted into the median and overturned. The three other girls traveling with her, including teammates Millicent Martin and Holly Kreyling, survived the crash.
Many of those in attendance wore rainbow-colored ribbons to honor Miller. As a freshman, Miller often wore rainbow armbands during her team's matches.
The service opened with a somber tone as Chancellor Jim Woodward encouraged those in a attendance to let Miller's life be a lasting source of inspiration and courage.
Miller was described by her friends and loved ones as spirited. Others recalled her sense of humor.
"She liked to be teased and to tease back," head volleyball coach Lisa Marston said.
The service closed with a video tribute. The presentation was made up of photos of Miller during her two seasons with the 49ers, including many away from the court.
Molly McDonald, a teammate of Miller's, remarked on how close the team had become.
"Fifteen girls have become a family," she said.
Miller joined the team as a walk-on prior to the 2002 season. She saw action in 23 matches as a freshman, dropping in 10 service aces. Last season, she moved to the libero position. As a sophomore, she played in 31 matches. Her 284 digs ranked third on the team.
She is survived by her mother, Mrs. Debbie Miller, her sister and brother Brittany Miller and Tim Miller, Jr.
