Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers volleyball team continued its spring schedule on Saturday, hosting a multi-team tournament at the ATAC's Charles Hayward Practice Gymnasium.
The 49ers team went 4-4 at the event against quality competition. In the spring format, teams played two games to 30 points against each opponent (rather than the normal best-of-5 match).
Charlotte lost a pair of close games to North Carolina, the defending Atlantic Coast Conference Champions. They also split with Miami (OH), which was 75th in the RPI last season. The 49ers split with Wingate, and defeated perennial Big South Conference power Coastal Carolina.
"Overall, I was pleased with our performance," said head coach Lisa Marston. "I thought in the Wingate match, we had a post-lunch break loss of focus. But I was happy to split with Miami, because I thought they were the most impressive team there on Saturday, and we played North Carolina tight.
"Our blocking continues to improve," she continued, "and we're getting settled with new personnel. I have been very impressed with the efforts of our middles. They are averaging around 3.5 kills per game, in comparison with 1.5 kpg last season. Eden Ramos is setting them well and we're having fun running a unique offense."
The 49ers volleyball team lost a trio of seniors from last year's team, which finished second in the Atlantic 10's East Division.
The previous weekend, the team traveled to Duke for their second spring tournament. The 49ers ended up beating Gardner-Webb, losing a very close match to Duke, and splitting with Appalachian State and Winthrop. They ended the tournament with a 4-4 record.
"We played pretty well," said Marston. "Winthrop and Duke both went to NCAAs, App won their division in a good conference. We're still young, still working on our system. I feel good about what we've done so far this spring. Duke's was another tournament with very high competition."
The 49ers posted a 7-1 games record in their first spring tournament at home, and stand at 15-9 overall this spring. To close out their spring slate, the team will travel to High Point this Saturday, April 8 for a 9:00 a.m. match.
