CHICAGO - Courtney Burg notched her 1,000th career kill to lead sixth-seeded Charlotte to a 3-2 (30-28, 27-30, 30-28, 28-30, 15-8) win over 11th-seeded Memphis in the first round of the Healthy Choice Conference USA Volleyball Tournament. Burg, who only needed seven kills heading into the match to reach the 1,000-kill milestone, now has 1,014 in her four-year career.
Charlotte and Memphis kept it close in all five games with the 49ers opening the match with a slim 30-28 win over the Tigers in the first game. Memphis tied the score after notching a team attack percentage of .234 to claim the second game, 30-27. Charlotte fought back in the third game, posting another 30-28 victory.
In the fourth game, neither team led by more than two points over each other until the Niners broke away with a 14-10 lead. The Tigers came back to tie at 21-21. They would not look back to earn a 30-28 victory.
Charlotte bounced back and claimed the final match,15-8, for its third appearance in the C-USA quarterfinals.
"We finally figured out the magic we needed to win the fifth game," said Charlotte head coach Lisa Marston. "We stayed aggressive and had a lot of energy and luck went our way. As a team we kept our hitting errors down and Courtney hit .264 for us, which is big for someone with a lot of attacks from the back. It was an impressive win for Charlotte."
Burg notched her 20th double-double of the season with 21 kills and 17 digs. Freshman Abby Szlanfucht followed with 14 kills, while Holly Kreyling notched 12 kills and 15 digs.
Brittany Barnett sparked Memphis' offense with a match-high 23 kills, while Heather Watts added 53 assists and 19 digs. Tiara Gilkey also nabbed 19 kills for a team-high .326 attack percentage. The Tigers finish the 2002 season with a 19-15 overall mark.
