CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers volleyball team made it three wins in a row Saturday night, topping TCU, 3-2, at Halton Arena. The win, the team's first five-game victory of the season, guarantees the 49ers will finish the year with a winning record. It also is the team's seventh Conference USA win of the year, tying the school record for conference wins in a season.
Playing in her final home match, Courtney Burg led the way for Charlotte (17-14, 7-6) with 20 kills and 16 digs for her 19th double-double of the season. Fellow senior Laura Darnell joined her in double figures for digs with 15. In addition to Burg, Katie Hall, Lisa Newell and Holly Kreyling finished in double figures for kills. Hall knocked down a season-high 16 kills, while Newell had 15 to go along with four blocks. Kreyling added 12. Megan Mosness also played in her final home match Saturday, earning a spot in the starting lineup.
TCU (12-17, 4-9) had three players finish with kill totals in double figures. Dominika Szabo racked up a match-best 28. Erin Estep had 12 kills, and Stephanie Watson posted a double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs.
The two teams traded wins throughout the match. After the 49ers won game one, 32-30, the Horned Frogs evened things up with their own 32-30 win in game two. Charlotte went back in front with a 30-28 win in the third game, but TCU again answered with a 30-21 win in game four. Finally, in the fifth game, the Niners jumped to their largest lead at any point in the match, 7-1, on an Abbey Szlanfucht kill and never looked back. The Frogs pulled within three, 8-5, but the 49ers went on to take the 15-8 win and clinch the match.
