Charlotte, NC - Despite a career-high 18 kills from freshman Cori Dayton, the Charlotte 49ers volleyball team dropped a 3-1 Conference USA decision to Marquette on Friday night at Halton Arena. The Golden Eagles prevailed by scores of 26-30, 30-26, 30-16 and 30-26.
Charlotte (18-13, C-USA 4-8) won the first game behind 21 kills, including six from sophomore Jessica Oldenburg and five from Dayton. Junior middle blocker Lisa Newell had four kills in six attempts in the first frame, serving up three aces.
Marquette (19-6, C-USA 9-3) reversed the score in the second game by coming from behind. They trailed 11-5 and 15-7 early on, but went on a 14-4 run and forced a Niner time out with the Golden Eagles leading 21-19. Marquette would outscore Charlotte 9-7 down the stretch, including the final two points of the game on kills by Theresa Coughlin.
With the score tied at five apiece early in the third, Marquette again went on a run, this time using a 10-3 spurt to open a 15-8 lead. Kimberly Todd led the way with three kills in that span, while Jenn Brown added a pair. Charlotte would get as close as 15-10, but Marquette retained control and eventually closed out the third on a 15-6 run, including the game's final six points.
In the fourth, Marquette jumped out to a quick lead once again, using a 5-1 run to gain a 17-9 lead and force a Charlotte time out. The Niners closed to within 20-17, but a service error and two straight attack errors by Charlotte forced the team's second time out with the Niners down six. After dropping a point, Charlotte came back from seven down with a 4-1 run, forcing a Golden Eagle time out, and would score the next point to make the score 27-24. The teams traded points back-and-forth to 29-26, but Brown closed out the match for Marquette with a kill.
Dayton added 17 digs, recording her second double-double of the year. Both came in the last five matches. She paced four Niners in double figures, as Newell had 15 and Oldenburg killed 14. Abbey Szlanfucht had 12 kills and 13 digs, while senior libero Holly Kreyling led the team with 23 digs.
