CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers volleyball team closed the regular-season on a high note, defeating Memphis, 3-2, Saturday night at Halton Arena. The victory guaranteed the 49ers would finish the season with a record of .500 or better. It also clinched the 10th seed in next week's Conference USA Tournament.
Charlotte (15-14, 5-11 C-USA) had a pair of players post double-doubles. Courtney Burg knocked down a game-high 22 kills and 15 digs. Kathleen Ramos, who was honored prior to the match along with fellow seniors Ashley Ferris and Esra Akgun, posted 18 kills and 23 digs. Ferris also reach double figures in kills with 10. She also teamed up on four blocks. Akgun finished the night with eight kills, five digs, three blocks and two service aces. Memphis (20-9, 7-9 C-USA) was led by Emily Eichmann's 18 kills and nine digs.
The 49ers got off to a strong start, winning game one, 30-24. The Tigers came back, however, taking the next two, 30-16 and 30-19. Charlotte tied the match and forced a fifth game with a 30-25 win in game four. In the fifth game, the Niners fell behind early but rallied to take the 15-9 win and clinch the match.
