Louisville - The Charlotte 49ers volleyball team lost to Conference USA leader No. 22 Louisville on Saturday night at Cardinal Arena, by scores of 30-14, 30-24, 30-25.
Charlotte (18-12, C-USA 4-7) kept the score tight early, trailing just 9-7 in game one. However, Louisville (22-0, C-USA 12-0) would go on a 10-4 run to open up a 19-11 lead, prompting a Niner time out. From that point, the nationally-ranked Cardinals would outscore Charlotte 11-3 to close out the game. The Niners were outhit .353 to - 0.61 in the opening frame.
Games two and three were more competitive. In the second, Charlotte closed to within 22-20 and 24-22, before a four-point Louisville run made the score 28-22. The Niners got two points on Cardinal errors, before the home club closed out the game with consecutive kills. In the third, Louisville led 24-23 late but scored six of the final eight points to end the match.
Junior Abbey Szlanfucht, who went over 1,000 kills in her career last night, led Charlotte with 12 of the team's 30 kills. Libero Holly Kreyling led all players with 15 digs.
Lena Ustymenko had 14 kills to lead Louisville, which was tied for 22nd in the latest USA Today/CSTV Coaches' Poll. Bing Sun killed 12 balls in 21 attempts, as the Cardinals remained unbeaten in Conference USA play.
Charlotte returns home to Halton Arena next weekend to close out the regular season. The Niners host Marquette on Friday night, and return to face DePaul on senior night, Saturday. Both matches begin at 7:00 pm.
