Nov. 3, 2005

Box Score

Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers volleyball team had 43 digs on Dig for the Cure night at Halton Arena on Tuesday, but fell 3-0 to George Washington.

Charlotte falls to 16-14 overall and 7-5 in Atlantic 10 play with the 30-27, 30-26, 30-26 loss.

Janine Brown had 19 kills and 14 digs to lead George Washington, which improves to 11-15, 4-8 this season.

Thursday night's match was Dig for the Cure night, helping the 49ers raise money for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Fans could pledge money per dig earned by the 49ers, or make a flat donation to the cause. The 49ers have helped organize over a dozen teams around the country in the effort to fight breast cancer.

The total amount raised by the 49ers will be announced at a later date. Fans interested in making a contribution to the effort can contact head coach Lisa Marston at ermarsto@email.uncc.edu.

Both teams hit for a high percentage in the match, with GW out-doing the 49ers .351 to .313. Charlotte committed just 14 hitting errors in the match, but their attacks just weren't finding the floor as often as the Colonials'.

Sophomore Alma Arroyo led the Niners with 14 kills on .367 hitting, adding 14 digs. Senior Abbey Szlanfucht had 13 kills and 11 digs, while Jessica Oldenburg added 10 kills.

Game one was tied at 22 before GW edged ahead with a pair of points. They never game up the lead after that point while outscoring the Niners 6-5 down the stretch to take a 30-27 win.

In the second game, a 7-0 run by the Colonials proved to be the Niners' undoing. Charlotte led 23-20, but George Washington reeled off four straight kills, a service ace, and two more kills to take control.

After the 10-minute intermission, the 49ers battled to a 21-all tie in the third game. Back to back points on a kill and a service ace gave GW the lead, and they would hold on for the 30-26 win on the strength of six kills down the stretch. Kelly Kabbes put down the final two points to end the match.

Charlotte will look to rebound against Atlantic 10 foe Fordham on Friday night at Halton Arena. That match will be senior night for the 49ers. Ceremonies will start at 6:45 p.m.
