Charlotte Outlasts George Washington in Five-Game Thriller

Romberg Sets School Record with 36 Digs on Dig for the Cure Night

Nov. 1, 2007

Box Score

Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers outlasted the George Washington Colonials to keep playoff hopes alive 3-2 (28-30, 30-16, 30-27, 21-30, 15-12) Thursday night at Halton Arena in Atlantic 10 volleyball action. The game was Charlotte's "Dig for the Cure" match, with monies raised benefiting the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer research. Charlotte recorded 103 digs in the match, and junior libero Carly Romberg, who already leads the A-10 in digs, set the school record with 36 in the contest. Charlotte improves to 14-12 on the season, and pulls into a tie with GWU at 4-7 in A-10 play. The Colonials drop to 12-15 overall, 4-7 in league play.

Dig for the Cure, a fundraiser started by former Charlotte volleyball coach Lisa Marston, begins its fifth year of existence. Started as a local fundraiser, the program is now a nationwide effort, with nearly 100 teams participating. Marston was honored at the match for her contributions to the program and to her national efforts.

Charlotte was able to build two different five-point leads in the opening game, each time watching GWU roar back into the game. Janine Brown, the team's kills leader, had a game-best six of her team-leading 24 kills in the first game.

Charlotte surged to a 5-1 start in game two, and after the Colonials closed to within two, Charlotte extended the lead out to 12, after a 16-6 run down the stretch. Niners kills leader Alma Arroyo had a game-high nine of her match-leading 27 kills in game two, while she and Romberg had 10 digs each in the game.

The Colonials jumped out to a 12-5 lead in game three, but Charlotte nipped away until getting the middle stanza tied at 22-all. An Arroyo kill and a pair of Colonials errors helped Charlotte build a three-point edge and take the game. Unforced errors held GWU to a zero attack percentage in the game (10 kills, 10 errors).

GWU went on a team to open game four, scoring six straight points early and making a 5-0 run a few points later, to take a 21-12 margin and coast to the tie. The Niners hit .098 in the game to set up the fifth game.

In game five, Charlotte saw senior Cori Dayton record an ace and a kill on her opening serve to take a 3-0 lead. Charlotte never allowed George Washington to get within a point the rest of the way as Arroyo added three more kills and Romberg net four more digs in the final column.

Five players had 11 or more digs for the Colonials, who netter 93 in the match. Jess Buche and Maggie Wright led the team with 21 digs each, while Brown added 14 for a double-double. Buche also dished out 41 assists in the contest.

Charlotte senior setter Eden Ramos had 59 assists, while Dayton and Arroyo had double-doubles. Dayton distributed 14 kills and 10 digs, with Arroyo netting 30 digs to go with her 27 kills. She leads Charlotte with 13 double-doubles on the season.

Charlotte hosts Fordham in its final regular season match and Senior Night, on Friday night at 7 p.m.
