HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss defeated the Charlotte 49ers volleyball team, 3-1, Friday night at the Payne Center. It was the first of two C-USA matches for the 49ers this weekend. Tomorrow night they play at Tulane.
Southern Miss (22-5, 7-2 in C-USA) was led by Bridget Files, who paced the team with a match-high 20 kills and 26 points. Nicki Tribble and Jazzmien Stephens followed with 16.5 points and 14.5 points, respectively.
For Charlotte (7-20, 0-8 C-USA), Abbey Szlanfucht put up 18 points and had a double-double with 17 kills and 17 digs in the match. Chanda Waller added 16 kills, while setter Molly McDonald had a match-high 51 assists. Danielle Miller also had double-digit digs with 15.
"Our effort was great tonight," head coach Lisa Marston said. "Despite the loss, we showed a lot of heart. Southern Miss knows how to win. They've won 22 times now, so know they know what to do in tight situations. I have to give them credit."
The Golden Eagles used a 30-19 win in game one to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The 49ers answered in the second game, evening things with a 31-29 win in the second game. Southern Miss put the match away, however, with 30-21 and 31-29 wins in games three and four.
