CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers volleyball team won their third-straight match Tuesday night, knocking out cross-county rival Davidson, 3-0, at Halton Arena. Esra Akgun became the ninth player in school history to top 1,000 career kills in the victory.

Akgun, a senior from Istanbul, Turkey, knocked down 15 kills in the Charlotte (12-12, 3-9 C-USA) win to finish the night with 1,006. It was the ninth time she had reached double figures in kills in 2001.

In addition to Akgun, Courtney Burg and Kathleen Ramos reached double figures in kills. Burg led the way with 16, while Ramos added 10. Burg and Akgun also came up with 19 and 12 digs, respectively, to record double-doubles for the Niners. Latisha Chapman came off the bench to lead Davidson (11-14, 8-7 SoCon) with nine kills. Meredith Lorenz put together a solid performance as well with seven kills and 10 digs.

The 49ers got on the board first with a 30-26 win in game one. They put the Wildcats on the ropes in game two, pulling out a 31-29 win. Megan Mosness and Ashley Ferris teams up on blocks for the 30th and 31st points. Charlotte continued to rely on timely blocking in the third game. Trailing by one, 17-16, Jessica Kelly delivered a solo block to time the game at 17. She came up big again on match point with another solo block, giving the Niners the 30-25 win to clinch the match.

The volleyball team closes out its homestand Friday, when they host Marquette at 7:00. The Golden Eagles won the last meeting with the 49ers, 3-0, in Milwaukee earlier this season. Admission is $3 for adults. Charlotte students and youth 17-and-under will be admitted free.
