Charlotte Volleyball Wins Fourth Straight

Headed for Showdown with Temple Tomorrow Night

Oct. 28, 2005

Box Score

Philadelphia - Senior Abbey Szlanfucht led Charlotte with 23 kills in a 3-1 win over La Salle at Tom Gola Arena on Friday night. The 49ers won by scores 30-24, 29-31, 30-22 and 30-16.

Charlotte (15-12, 7-3 A-10) took the opener, and later recovered from a relative slip in game two to close out the Explorers easily. It was the team's fourth straight win, including three on the road in Atlantic 10 play.

Szlanfucht led all players with 23 kills, hitting a season-best .413 while adding 12 digs. Sophomore Alma Arroyo also recorded a double-double with 15 kills and 11 digs.

The 49ers hit .409 in the opener, holding a six-point advantage or better through most of a 30-24 win. Szlanfucht, Arroyo and senior Lisa Newell each had five kills in the game win.

The Explorers came back to win the second game 31-29, behind an 11-6 run to open the game. The 49ers battled back to tie the game at 25, 28 and then 29, but allowed a kill and an attack error as the game slipped away. The Niners committed 11 hitting errors in the loss.

The game two victory was the first Atlantic 10 game win this season for La Salle (9-18, 0-10 A-10).

Charlotte recovered for two easy wins in the third and fourth games, however, including a .417 hitting percentage in the finale. The 49ers led by as much as 15 (29-14) in the last game.

Freshman libero Carly Romberg posted match-, season-, and career-highs with 29 digs.

"Carly was phenomenal," said coach Lisa Marston. "Abbey also played terrific with a good percentage. We don't have a lot of turnaround time for our match against Temple tomorrow afternoon at 4:00, so we just have to get ready for that."

Junior Jessica Oldenburg had 15 kills, while Newell logged 12 kills and five total blocks.

Charlotte stays in Philadelphia for a showdown with East Division leader Temple (15-9, 8-2 A-10) Saturday afternoon. The Niners won the series opener, 3-2, on Sept. 30 in Charlotte, and now trail the Owls by one win with three league matches remaining this season.

Charlotte plays three matches next week, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday nights at Halton Arena.
