Oct. 27, 2007

Box Score

Philadelphia, Pa. - Senior Alma Arroyo set her career-high with 32 kills and redshirt freshman Kat Hicks tied her career-high with 16 kills as the Charlotte 49ers outlasted a feisty La Salle volleyball squad to win 3-1 (20-30, 30-17, 33-31, 33-31) at Tom Gola Arena in Philadelphia on Saturday afternoon in Atlantic 10 action. The win pushes Charlotte above .500 to 13-12, and improves its conference mark to 3-7. La Salle slips to 10-21 on the season, 1-10 in A-10 play.

Arroyo has averaged 21 kills per match over the last three matches, at more than six kills per game over that period.

Arroyo notched her team-high 12th double-double of the season by adding 10 digs. Junior libero Carly Romberg added 30 digs in the match, one shy of her career-high which se set earlier this season.

After coming out of the gates slowly in game one, Charlotte surged in game two, scoring early and often to build an early 10-4 lead, never losing a margin of at least five points in the frame. Arroyo put down nine kills in that match.

Game three had 11 ties in a see-saw battle. La Salle managed a pair of four-point leads, the largest of the game, with Charlotte coming back each time. Sophomore Jenn Webb had an ace in a serving run of three straight points to close the margin to one point at 28-27. Arroyo and fellow senior Cori Dayton recorded a pair of kills from the 29-all point of the game to enable the Niners to emerge victorious.

The fourth and deciding game mirrored the third, with Charlotte holding the largest margin of three to start at a 3-0 score. Arroyo had a match-best 11 kills in the final game to help the Niners to the road win, which was their first in league play.

Senior setter Eden Ramos had 60 assists in the match, while junior Courtney Cowles added 13 digs in the win.

Charlotte will play its final two home matches of the season this week, hosting George Washington on Thursday night at 7 p.m. on "Dig for the Cure" night, with Fordham visiting on Friday on Senior Night at 7 p.m.
