Washington, D.C. - Senior Lisa Newell had 24 kills on .538 hitting to key Charlotte's come-from-behind 3-2 win at George Washington on Sunday at the Smith Center. The 49ers prevailed by scores of 30-23, 21-30, 25-30, 30-24 and 15-10.
Charlotte improves to 14-12 overall and 6-3 in the Atlantic 10 with the its third straight win, while GW falls to 10-13, 3-6.
The 49ers came out on fire, hitting .594 in the opening game to take an early lead. But the Niners would drop the next two games to put themselves in a hole at the intermission.
Jessica Oldenburg (6 kills, .667 hitting) and Alma Arroyo (5-for-5 on attack attempts) keyed the game one run, in which the team committed only one hitting error.
"We really did a good job coming out in the first match," said Coach Marston.
In game two, the 49ers were down just 15-14, but allowed a 7-2 run that put them back on their heels and resulted in a 30-21 loss.
Game three featured a similar Colonial run. With Charlotte ahead 24-21, GW would score nine of the last 10 points despite two Niner time outs for a 2-1 lead.
The momentum carried over into a 14-9 Colonial edge in game four, before the 49ers responded. They fought back to a 15-all tie, and later scored the final five points of the game to break open a 30-24 win. Oldenburg killed three balls in that game-ending stretch to send the match to the finale.
The 49ers jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the fifth game to take control, thanks in part to three kills by Alma Arroyo. The teams would trade points the rest of the way for a 3-2 Charlotte victory.
"We did a good job from coming back from being sort of emotionally and mentally down after games two and three, coming back and being very aggressive. We were down 14-9 in the fourth game, and it was a big momentum swing. Lisa Newell was just unbelievable today. Carly Romberg had 20 digs, a great match too. Good match, good win. Now we have to prepare for big time road matches this weekend."
