RADFORD, Va. - The Charlotte 49ers returned to the win column Wednesday, going on the road to defeat Radford, 3-1, at the Dedmon Center. It was the 49ers' final non-conference match of the season.
Jessica Kelly and Lisa Newell led the offensive attack for Charlotte (7-18) with 14.5 and 12.5 points, respectively. Kelly led the team with 13 kills, while Newell added 10. Danielle Miller, Abbey Szlanfucht and Chandra Waller all topped double figures in digs with totals of 14, 13 and 10. It was Szlanfucht's first match for the 49ers in nearly a month, when she left the College of Charleston match, Sept. 26, with an ankle injury.
Tiffany Guthrie led the way for Radford (2-20) with a match-high 17 points, all on kills. Divona Cox chipped in with 10 kills and had five blocks.
The 49ers looked to pick up the sweep after winning the first two games, 30-22 and 30-21. The Highlanders dug in to prolong the match with a 30-16 win in the third game. They were unable to force a fifth game, however, succumbing to Charlotte, 30-20, in the fourth game.
The Niners return to action this weekend, when they play at East Carolina, Saturday evening.
