Oct. 21, 2007

Box Score

Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers snapped a four-match Atlantic 10 losing skid by defeating visiting Duquesne Sunday afternoon 3-0 (30-21, 30-26, 30-27) at Halton Arena in NCAA volleyball action. Charlotte improves to 12-11 overall, 2-6 in A-10 play, while Duquesne slides to 10-13 overall and 2-6 in league play. The Niners are 8-3 at home this season.

"We have to come out and play hard every time out," said 49ers head coach Chris Redding. "For us to win, we need everyone contributing."

The Niners jumped out to an early 6-3 lead in game one and never relinquished any less than a three-point margin. Sophomore Jenn Webb put together a six-point serving run late as Charlotte went up 24-15 and cruised to the nine-point victory.

Charlotte started out 6-0 in game two, but saw Duquesne chip away and tie the game at 22-all. Then consecutive kills by Webb, Alma Arroyo and Eden Ramos prompted a three-point margin and a timeout by Duquesne. The Dukes closed to within two points, but Charlotte outlasted the Dukes to win the second frame.

In game three, both teams competed early as the largest margin was five points, with Charlotte leading 13-8. The Dukes kept it close, getting the game tied at each point from 24 to 27, until the Niners recorded a pair of kills and won on an attack error by the Dukes to close out the match.

Arroyo led all players with 20 kills on the afternoon. She recorded her team-leading 11th double-double of the season by adding 17 digs. Senior Cori Dayton (13) and redshirt freshman Kat Hicks (10) also were in double-figures in kills for Charlotte. Dayton added 14 digs for her tenth double-double of the season. Senior setter Eden Ramos produced 40 assists for the Niners, with junior libero Carly Romberg posting the match-high 25 digs.

The Dukes were led by Dana McLaughlin's 10 kills. She recorded a double-double of her own, adding 15 digs. Setter Kristin Garnett had 25 assists. Three other Dukes cracked double figures in digs, led by Palko's 20. Nicole Wright had 11 and Katie Goss contributed 10 digs on the afternoon.

Charlotte got to double figures in blocks for the fourth time this season (all resulting in wins). The Niners had three from Hicks, with freshman Kara Raker adding a pair.

"We like the defensive changes we've made recently," said Redding. "Now we need to go and get some road wins."

Charlotte, which is just 2-6 on the road this year, will play a pair of road A-10 matches in Philadelphia next weekend. The Niners take on Temple Friday night at 7 p.m. and La Salle at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
