Charlotte, N.C. - Saint Louis traveled to Charlotte and made late runs in each of the first two games to power past the 49ers and get an Atlantic 10 volleyball victory 3-0 (30-24, 30-24, 30-20) at Halton Arena Friday night. Charlotte drops to 11-11, 1-6 in the A-10. Saint Louis improves to 16-5, 5-2 in A-10 play. The Niners have dropped four straight A-10 matches, while Saint Louis has won its last six matches.
"I liked how we came out and played in the first two games," said Niners coach Chris Redding. "Carly Romberg stepped up and played outstanding defense tonight."
Game one was a see-saw battle as both teams tried to get out of the blocks. Both teams were able to put together runs of four points in a row, but with SLU up 23-22 late in game one, the Billikens managed a five-point run to finish off the Niners to take the opening frame. Charlotte hit just .088 in game one, while SLU had a .244 attack percentage.
In game two, Charlotte stretched an early lead to 15-9 and held on to lead 20-17, but the Billikens again made a furious rush, reeling off eight of the next ten points to grab a 25-22 lead and never give it up. Charlotte improved in game two to a .152 attack percentage, but SLU was equal to the improving, powering to a .320 team hitting percentage in the second game.
Game three started close, with Charlotte holding a slim 10-9 margin, but the Billikens went on a 16-2 run to close out the final frame. Game three saw the Niners hit a negative percentage (-.030), while SLU had five service aces to power through the final game.
"We kind of fell apart at the end of game two and could not get back our momentum. We've got to start winning on this next pass through the conference and get some of our early momentum back."
Alma Arroyo led the Niners with 10 kills, while Romberg recorded 24 digs. Senior setter Eden Ramos logged 31 assists on the night.
