Volleyball Serves Up Win Over Radford

Niners record 17 service aces in the match, improve to 16-8 overall.

Halton Arena - Junior outside hitter Abbey Szlanfucht had 16 kills and 13 digs to lead Charlotte to a 3-1 win over non-conference opponent Radford at Halton Arena on Tuesday night. Sophomore Jessica Oldenburg had 13 kills, while Alma Arroyo added 11, as Charlotte improved to 16-8 on the season by scores of 30-21, 25-30, 30-17, and 30-14.

In the fourth game, Charlotte took a lead at 7-6 and did not let up, outscoring Radford 23-8 to close out the match. Junior Lisa Newell served ten consecutive times and Szlanfucht had three kills during a 10-0 run that made the score 17-7. In all, Charlotte posted 18 kills on .324 hitting in the final frame.

Charlotte, which ran its non-conference record to 14-4, took a lead at 6-5 and never trailed in the first game after that point. Radford (3-16) pulled to within 20-16, only to see the Niners stretch the lead with a 10-5 run to end the first.

Charlotte head coach Lisa Marston used the second game to extended playing time for freshman setter Eden Ramos. Playing in just her tenth match of the season, Ramos had six assists and one kill in the second game. In the third game, Charlotte held the Highlanders to a -.150 hitting percentage, registering three blocks and forcing 11 hitting errors in an easy 30-17 win.

Charlotte totaled 17 service aces in the match, the team's third-highest total of the season. The Niners were ranked fourth among the national leaders in service aces per game heading into the match. Newell led the team with five aces, her highest total since serving up nine in the season opener. Holly Kreyling, Arroyo and Molly McDonald, each contributed three aces apiece.

 

 

Charlotte continues a three-match homestand with a pair of Conference USA matches on Friday and Saturday nights. On Friday, the team squares off against Southern Miss at 7:00 pm.

Charlotte will play a special "Dig for the Cure" match against Tulane on Saturday night at 7:00. Fans can pledge money per dig, or make a flat donation, with all proceeds benefiting the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Niner head coach Lisa Marston started the program, which now includes all 14 C-USA schools and has a goal of raising $42,000 for the local Komen affiliates in each school's community.
