Niners Pick Up A-10 Road Win Over Rhode Island

Oct. 16, 2005

Box Score

Kingston, R.I. - The Charlotte 49ers dropped the first game, but recovered to win the next three fairly easily in a 28-30, 30-22, 30-19, 30-26 Atlantic 10 win over Rhode Island at Keaney Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon.

Sophomore Alma Arroyo and senior Abbey Szlanfucht led the 49ers with 17 kills apiece, while junior Jessica Oldenburg had 16 kills on .500 hitting. Senior Lisa Newell was the fourth 49er with at least 15 kills, logging that many on .480 hitting.

"We did a good job of recovering after the first game and following the game plan," said head coach Lisa Marston. "Oldie did a really nice job toward the end. Eden set a great game. It was a good match. No time to celebrate, because now we've got to get ready for North Carolina A&T on Tuesday. We didn't play very well on Friday, but I'm pleased that we got it back together."

Charlotte improves to 12-12 overall and 5-3 in the Atlantic 10 with the victory. Rhode Island falls to 6-14 overall and 1-6 in A-10 play.

It was the first time these two teams had ever met.

Charlotte went ahead 25-20 in the opening game before aiding a five-point run with three attack errors. The 49ers pushed the score to 28-27, but could not put the game away and ultimately dropped a 30-28 decision.

The 49ers were able to regroup quickly and took the second game easily at 30-22. Rhode Island was never able to close the gap to less than four points while the Niners led by as many as seven on three occasions before putting the game away. Charlotte hit .594 in the frame, getting five kills apiece from Szlanfucht (.500 hitting), Oldenburg and Newell (both on just six attempts with no errors).

The Rams committed 10 hitting errors in the third game as the Niners cruised to a 30-19 decision. Szlanfucht again came up with five kills for the 49ers, with Arroyo adding four.

In the finale, Newell was a perfect 6-for-6 on attack attempts and Oldenburg slammed home six kills on just 12 tries. The Rams led 20-17 before five straight 49ers points gave them a two-point edge they would not relinquish.

Freshman libero Carly Romberg led all players with 17 digs, while setter Eden Ramos had a match-high 66 assists. Szlanfucht added 13 digs for her team-high 13th double-double of the season.

The 49ers will have a shot to go over the .500 mark for the first time this season when they return home to face North Carolina A&T on Tuesday night,

The team travels to face A-10 division rival George Washington on Sunday, Oct. 23 for their only match next weekend.
