St. Louis, Mo. - Junior outside hitter Abbey Szlanfucht had arguably the best hitting night of her three-year career, as the Charlotte 49ers volleyball team rallied from two games down to take a crucial road decision against Conference USA foe St. Louis at the Bauman-Eberhardt Center on Friday night.
After losing the first two games 22-30, 28-30, Charlotte (15-7, C-USA 2-3) regrouped to take the next three by scores of 30-26, 30-23, and 15-9.
Szlanfucht, the team's leader in kills per game this season, poured in a career-high 30 kills on .400 hitting to lead the Niners. Freshman Alma Arroyo added 17 kills, while Jessica Oldenburg (15) and Lisa Newell (13) also reached double figures.
Oldenburg recorded her 15 kills on .462 hitting, and contributed a match-high three service aces to add to her team lead. Two of her strikes came during a decisive eight-point run that broke open a tight fourth game.
"We needed a match like this," head coach Lisa Marston said afterward. "We were down 0-2 tonight, and came back to win the next three games. To make a big turnaround against a good team like this was very important. The whole team played together, played aggressively, I'm very proud of them."
Marston singled out the defensive play of libero Holly Kreyling, who led all players in the match with 20 of her team's 47 digs. Newell added five block assists, while Oldenburg had four.
"We're very happy to have the road win," Marston continued. "Memphis tomorrow night ... they're a tough team, that plays hard every second, and we're looking forward to seeing how our team responds to the challenge."
Aida Antanaviciute, the conference leader in kills per game, totaled 32 in the losing effort for St. Louis (9-11, C-USA 1-3). Charlotte setter Molly McDonald tied her career high with a season-best 69 assists, as her team hit .311 on the night.
