CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers volleyball posted their second-staright Conference USA win Saturday, sweeping Marquette, 3-0, at Halton Arena.
Courtney Burg was the only player for Charlotte (12-9, 3-1 C-USA) to reach double figures in kills with a match-high 16. She also had 13 digs to notch her 12th double-double of the season. Laura Darnell came up with a match-high 17 digs for the 49ers' cause. Marquette (9-7, 1-3 C-USA) was led by Theresa Coughlin's 13 kills. Shannon Devine was also in double figures with 10.
Both teams played each other even through the first two games. In both cases, the 49ers prevailed, pulling out 33-31 and 32-30 wins. Game three wasn't nearly as close as the Niners clinched the match with a 30-22 win. Although Charlotte hit .367 as a team in the third game, the two teams struggled hitting the ball much of the night. The 49ers had a .105 hitting percentage for the match, while Marquette faired slightly better at .126.
Charlotte returns to action on the road next weekend, playing at Louisville and Cincinnati. The 49ers' next home match is Saturday, Oct. 26, when they host C-USA rival East Carolina.
