Charlotte, N.C. - Three players hit over .700 to lead the Charlotte 49ers to a new school record .594 hitting percentage in a sweep of Gardner-Webb on Tuesday night at Halton Arena. Senior Lisa Newell set the school's 10-14 attempts hitting percentage record by hitting .769 in the match.
The 49ers won by scores of 30-21, 30-18, and 30-15 in just 57 minutes of playing time.
Charlotte (11-11) won for the 11th time in the last 16 matches and smashed the school's three-game record for hitting percentage with 49 kills and just 8 errors on 69 attempts (.594 percentage).
The previous record was .500, set on three occasions, including last season at Gardner-Webb.
Lisa Newell, Jessica Oldenburg, and Alma Arroyo each hit over .700 in the match. Newell led the way with .769 hitting, logging 10 kills on 13 attempts with no errors. That is a new school record for hitting percentage (10-14 attempts).
Oldenburg hit .727 (9 kills, 1 error, 11 attempts), while Arroyo hit .714 (12-2-14).
Senior Abbey Szlanfucht had 10 kills in the match, and moved into sole possession of fifth place on the school's all-time kills list (1,360). She is within striking distance of fourth all-time, needing just 57 more kills to reach that milestone.
The 49ers added a season-best 11 service aces in the match, including three apiece from Szlanfucht and freshman Courtney Cowles.
Gardner-Webb was led by Ashley Pridgeon with seven kills. The Bulldogs fell to 9-17 this season with the loss.
