CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Lisa Newell knocked down 13 kills and hit .619 for the match to lead the Charlotte 49ers volleyball team to a 3-1 win over DePaul Friday night at Halton. The Blue Demons are the defending champs of Conference USA.

Newell built her .619 hitting percentage with 13 kills on 21 attacks with no errors for Charlotte (11-9, 2-1 C-USA). It is the fourth time the freshman has hit over .400 for a match this season. Courtney Burg also had a big night. She had her 11th double-double of the season with 18 kills and 14 digs. Molly McDonald, who sat on the bench for most of the last three matches with an injured ankle, returned to the lineup to log 53 assists. DePaul (4-15, 0-3 C-USA) had two players with kill totals in double figures. Lara Marks had 18, while Janet Goreham had 17.

The 49ers came out of the gates fast, taking a 1-0 lead in the match with a 30-24 win in game one. The Blue Demons answered, however, in game two with a 30-23 win. After the long break, Charlotte went back in front in the third game. The Niners won that one, 30-17 after jumping out to an 8-0 lead. The 49ers clinched the match in game four, winning 30-27.

Charlotte returns to action Saturday night, when they host Marquette at 7:00 in Halton Arena.
