MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Marquette picked up its first conference win of the season, defeating the Charlotte 49ers volleyball team, 3-0, Friday night. It was the first of two matches for the Niners this weekend. The team plays at DePaul, Saturday evening.
Theresa Coughlin and Ann Lopata accounted for 13 points each to lead Marquette (4-12, 1-2 C-USA). Coughlin had a match-high 13 kills, while Lopata added 12.
Lisa Newell scored a team-best 9.5 points for Charlotte (6-15, 0-3 C-USA). She and Jessica Kelly paced the team with five kills each. Newell also registered three service aces and three block assists.
After cruising to a 30-12 win in game one, the Golden Eagles went on to take the second and third games, 30-21 and 30-19 to clinch the match. Marquette took advantage of a .333 hitting percentage, compared to a .009 percentage for Charlotte.
