DAVIDSON, N.C. - Led by 28 kills from Esra Akgun and 23 kills from Christy Galvin, the Charlotte 49ers volleyball team earned a 3-2 victory over Davidson Tuesday night at Belk Arena. The match was the first for head coach Lisa Marston against her former team. Marston coached the Wildcats for five seasons before joining the 49ers this fall.
Akgun and Galvin recorded 15 and 32 digs, respectively, to go along with their kill totals to post double-doubles for Charlotte (8-11, 2-5 C-USA). Ozlem Ozkan Ayture had a big night as well, recording her second straight triple-double. She had 12 kills, including one to clinch the match, to go along with 60 assists and 31 digs. Mara Mordini led Davidson (11-8, 7-2 SoCon) with 22 kills and 26 digs.
The Wildcats won the first game, 15-11, to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The 49ers regrouped to claim the second and third games with 15-9 and 15-10 wins. After Charlotte took an 11-10 lead in game four, Davidson tied the game and went on to pick up a 15-11 victory. Charlotte clinched the match with a 15-10 win in game five.
The Niners hit the road for a pair of Conference USA matches this weekend. They play at Tulane Friday night before taking on Southern Miss Saturday night. Charlotte's next home match is Friday, Oct. 20, versus UAB.
