Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers volleyball team had its four-match win streak snapped on Sunday afternoon at Halton Arena, falling to A-10 opponent Saint Louis by scores of 30-28, 30-28, 20-30 and 30-17.
Saint Louis, chosen to finish second in the West Division in the preseason coaches poll, improves to 9-10 overall and 3-2 in Atlantic 10 play with the victory. This is the only time the two former Conference USA rivals will meet this season.
Charlotte (10-11, 4-2 A-10) was undone by 28 hitting errors in the match, including 19 in the first two games.
Sophomore Alma Arroyo led the 49ers with 20 kills on .500 hitting, adding 11 digs. Senior Lisa Newell had 15 kills, while sophomore Jessica Oldenburg had 14.
Freshman libero Carly Romberg had a match-high 20 digs, and averaged 6.00 per game in two matches this weekend.
For Saint Louis, Atlantic 10 kills leader Tatyana Menshikova led the way with a match-high 24 kills on .442 hitting, while 2004 honorable mention All-American Aida Antanaviciute had 15 kills and 13 digs.
The 49ers tied the opening game 26-26 on a kill by senior Abbey Szlanfucht, but allowed two straight points and called a time out.
A Lisa Newell kill pulled Charlotte within one, 28-27, but her service error on the next point gave the Billikens a game point opportunity. A kill by Alma Arroyo gave the 49ers fans hope, and forced a SLU time out. But Lauren Boissevain would put down a kill on the next play to give game one to Saint Louis.
The second game was again tied at 26 apiece before a pair of Saint Louis kills put the 49ers back on their heels once again. Down 29-27, Arroyo again came through with another clutch kill to keep the 49ers' hopes alive. But in exactly the same way as game one, SLU came through with a kill to go ahead 2-0.

Charlotte never really got things going in the final game, though, falling behind 7-1. SLU would extend that lead to 21-14, and then reeled off five straight points - including three service aces - to take the steam out of Charlotte.
The 49ers, who have won 10 of their last 15 matches overall, conclude a five-match homestand on Tuesday night when they battle non-conference opponent Gardner-Webb. Match time is 7:00 p.m.
