Charlotte, NC - Despite a match-high 21 kills on .359 hitting by outside hitter Abbey Szlanfucht, the Charlotte 49ers volleyball team dropped a conference match to TCU on Friday night at Halton Arena. TCU prevailed by scores of 30-21, 30-18, 24-30 and 30-22 to remain unbeaten in Conference USA play this season.
TCU's Anna Vaughn hit .538 and recorded eight of her 18 total kills in the decisive game four, leading her team to a third straight conference victory and its fifth win in a row overall.
TCU (12-5, C-USA 3-0) came out hot, hitting a combined .468 in the opening two games, including 11 kills by Ellen Rehme. The Horned Frogs also benefited from 15 attack and nine service errors by Charlotte in that span.
Following the extended intermission, Charlotte (14-6, C-USA 1-2) began playing with a renewed engery and quickly took an 11-3 lead in game three. The 49ers extended the lead to the biggest of the night at 20-11, before a 9-2 TCU run cut the lead down to just two. Charlotte recovered nicely to close out the third game, getting three kills from Szlanfucht during an 8-2 run.
Szlanfucht scored 22 points and also led her team with 17 digs. Middle Lisa Newell tacked on 11 kills, while Millicent Martin and Lynae Mulder added nine and eight kills, respectively.
TCU libero Loren Berry led all players with 20 digs, while Rehme finished with 17 kills. Dominika Szabo added 14.
Charlotte returns to Halton Arena to face Houston on Saturday night. The match begins at 7:00 pm, and admission is $5 for adults. Youth (17 & under) and Charlotte 49ers students with valid ID are admitted free of charge.
