Brooklyn, N.Y. - The Charlotte 49ers (10-8) defeated the host St. Francis (NY) Terriers (1-21), 30-25, 30-19, 30-21, on Sunday afternoon at the Genovesi Center in Brooklyn.
"We were happy to get a road win and get some people some different experience," said Niners head coach Chris Redding. "We tried some different things we that wanted to work on. Courtney did a great job with communicating as she was setting for the first time this year. She did an excellent job of running the offense."
During the match, Charlotte senior Cori Dayton recorded her 1,000th career kill in the match, becoming the 15th player in team history to reach that mark.
St. Francis jumped out to a great start in the opening game and led 17-11 after a kill by junior outside hitter Diana Colon. However, the 49ers went on an 8-1 run to grab an 18-17 advantage on a kill by senior outside hitter Alma Arroyo. The Terriers were within a point at 21-20 after a kill by junior Erin O'Shaughnessy, but the 49ers rattled off three straight points to push the lead back to 24-20. The Terriers were unable to get any closer.
The Terriers again got off to a fast start in game two, and led 9-6 in the opening stages. But Charlotte scored six unanswered points to go in front 12-9 and they never trailed again. St. Francis closed to within 12-11 on a 49ers' attack error, but Charlotte went on a massive 11-1 run to put the game out of reach.
Charlotte led 8-2 to open game three behind three kills by sophomore Jennifer Webb. The Terriers were within 16-12 following a kill by sophomore Detelina Dimitrova, but could not close the gap any further.
Senior Jadelyn Castillo and Dimitrova each recorded 5 kills for the Terriers, while freshman Liliana Rodriguez chipped in with 10 digs.
