Charlotte Volleyball Wins Second Straight In Conference

Niners Continue Home Dominance in Four-Game Win Over Colonials

Oct. 7, 2006

Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers ended a brief two-game home slide and won their second straight Atlantic 10 Conference match in a 3-1 home win (33-35, 30-15, 30-16, 30-25) versus George Washington Saturday night at Halton Arena. The Niners hit on their third-highest attack percentage of the season, at .310 for the match. Charlotte has now won three of its last four matches and improves to 13-8 on the season, including a 7-2 home mark and a 2-3 record in A-10 play. The Colonials drop to 8-9 and 1-4 in A-10 play.

Game one was high with emotion, as the Colonials defended four game points and Charlotte another before GW watched Cori Dayton hit an attack beyond the back line and win 35-33. The Colonials came back from a slow start, going down by as much as 10-4 to rally and tie the game at 20. Charlotte took a late three-point lead at 27-24, but three straight points by the visitors on a pair of Niners errors and a kill by Colonials outside hitter Juliene McLaughlin put it back to a 27-all tie. The next six leads were equaled a point later to push the match to a 33-all tie until the GW two-point rally for the win. Dayton had eight of her match-high 27 kills in the first game.

Game two was not so close. Charlotte zoomed out to another 10-4 lead to start game two, but did not allow George Washington back in the game, going on three four-point runs and a five point rally to extend the leads to 25-12. Middle hitter Claire Crumpton had six kills and no errors in six attacks in game two for a perfect 1.000 game. Charlotte hit a stout .333 in the second frame to reassert itself into the intermission.

In game three, GW took an early two-point margin, but that quickly evaporated thanks to an 11-0 run by the Niners on the serve of middle Lynae Mulder. Mulder knocked down three straight aces and Dayton pounded four of her game-high nine kills in that stretch. Charlotte was amazingly efficient in the third game, hitting at a season-high single-game mark of .600 on 21 kills and three errors in 30 attacks.

Game four finished closer than the middle two, with GW taking a pair of early leads and keeping the game close. Charlotte took the lead at 12-11 and never trailed again, despite four more ties. Tied at 24-24, Charlotte won four points in a row on a three Colonials errors and a Dayton kill, and Charlotte only surrendered one more point to the match win.

Junior setter Eden Ramos tied her season high with 68 assists, while libero Carly Romberg lifted the match-high 27 digs in the match. Senior outside hitter Jessica Oldenburg had 15 kills. Dayton put together her 12th double-double of the season with 15 digs to go along with her 27 kills. She has 11 such statistical marks in her last 14 matches.

McLaughlin and outside hitter Janine Brown tied for the team-high with 15 kills each, while setter Kaimana Lee dished out 43 assists. Lee also helped defensively with 14 digs to lead the GW charge.

Charlotte remains at home during fall break, playing a 6 p.m. match Tuesday night against Mercer.
