CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers volleyball team came up short in its first match of Conference USA play, falling to USF, 3-1, Friday night at Halton Arena.
Four players scored in double figures for USF (7-10, 1-0 C-USA), who was led by Shameka Mitchell's 30.5 points. Mitchell finished the night with a match-high 28 kills to go along with a service ace, a solo block and a block assist. Fran Pozzi also had a big night offensively, knocking down 20 kills for all 20 of her points. Mitchell and Pozzi both reached double figures in digs as well, coming up with 12 and 17, respectively, to record double-doubles.

Chanda Waller added 13 points on 13 kills, while Jessica Kelly logged 10.5 points on nine kills, an ace and a block assist. Abbey Szlanfucht, one of the team's top hitters, missed her second-straight match with an ankle sprain suffered last weekend. She is expected to miss the next several weeks.
The Bulls got out to an early lead in the match, winning game one, 30-22. The 49ers countered to even things in the second game, pulling out a 30-28 victory. USF regrouped, however and went on to take the match with 30-17 and 30-21 wins in the third and fourth games.
It will be a quick turnaround for Charlotte. Tomorrow night, the team hosts another C-USA foe in UAB at 7:00 in Halton Arena. Then on Sunday, the 49ers welcome Jacksonville for a 4:00 non-conference match.
