Birmingham, AL - Middle blockers Lisa Newell and Jessica Oldenburg combined for 30 kills and the Charlotte volleyball team rebounded from a loss the previous night with a 3-0 win over UAB on Saturday night at Bartow Arena. The Niners prevailed by scores of 32-30, 30-20 and 30-22 to even their Conference USA record at 1-1.
Newell led all players with 17 kills, and Oldenburg contributed 13, to lead Charlotte (14-5, C-USA 1-1) to its fifth victory in six matches. The pair dominated the middle, combining to hit .469 with 32.5 points, as they totaled 30 of the team's 49 kills in the match. It was the fifth straight time Newell posted double figures in kills.
"We came out with a lot more energy tonight," head coach Lisa Marston commented. "We played better and followed our game plan a lot better. Road wins are very hard to come by ... being 1-1 is OK. We had hoped to be 2-0, but after losing last night it's good to respond and come away with a win this weekend."
UAB (1-11, C-USA 0-2) has lost two straight following their first win of the season last week. The Blazers opened the season on a nine match losing streak, winning just two games during that stretch. Nicole Bowland led the team with 12 kills, as UAB committed 22 hitting errors in the match.
Charlotte's leading hitter, Abbey Szlanfucht, was held under her season average for the second consecutive night but continued to contribute in other areas. She chipped in with 10 digs, three service aces and two block assists to help key the victory. Freshman Alma Arroyo led all players with 12 digs, while setter Molly McDonald totaled 40 assists.
Charlotte returns to Halton Arena for two Conference USA matches next weekend. The Niners host TCU on Friday, Sept. 8 and return to face Houston the following night. Both matches begin at 7:00 pm, and admission is $5 for adults. Youth (17 & under) and Charlotte 49ers students with valid ID are admitted free of charge.
