CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Taking full advantage of a fast start, Houston topped Charlotte in the schools' Conference USA volleyball match Tuesday night at Halton Arena. The Cougars, who just managed to defeat the 49ers last fall, didn't have as tough a time this season, winning 3-0.

Houston (10-3, 4-0 C-USA) quickly took a 2-0 lead in the match, streaking to a 15-2 win in game one and a 15-4 win in game two. Charlotte (6-8, 1-3 C-USA) tried to regain its composure in the third game. Down 7-5, the 49ers came back to tie the match, 7-7, on a kill from Chanda Waller. The Cougars answered the challenge, scoring eight straight points to win game three 15-7 and clinch the match.

Jennifer Wittenburg led Houston with 14 kills. Charlotte, who was held to 19 kills, was led by Waller with six. She also recorded a solo block for the Niners.

Charlotte's next match is Sunday, October 1, when they host South Florida at 2:00 in Halton Arena.
