Elon, N.C. - Senior Lisa Newell and sophomore Alma Arroyo each tallied 14 kills to lead the Charlotte 49ers volleyball team to a non-conference sweep of Elon at Alumni Gym on Tuesday night. The 49ers won by scores of 30-27, 30-26, and 30-20.

Charlotte (7-10) hit .318 in the match, led by Newell and Arroyo. Newell put down 14 kills on just 18 attempts, committing only one error for a season-best .722 attack percentage. Arroyo had 14 kills on .440 hitting.

The Niners have now won seven of their last 11 matches and three of the last four.

In game one, Charlotte went on a 4-0 run to pull ahead 20-18. Elon would close to within 25-24, but the 49ers would put them away with five of the last eight points.

Elon led by as much as 13-7 in the second game, before Charlotte matched that run exactly to forge a 20-all tie. The 49ers would lead 27-22 before closing out a 30-26 win.

The Niners led 18-9 in the finale, but a 6-0 Elon run cut the lead to three. After Elon closed to within 20-18, the 49ers would go on a 7-0 run on the serve of Abbey Szlanfucht to push the lead to nine.

Elon (3-10) was led by Britany Westphal with 14 kills on .519 hitting. But the 49ers held the Phoenix to just .167 hitting in the match.

Eden Ramos had 42 assists for Charlotte, which also got 10 kills from senior Abbey Szlanfucht.

The Niners host the first-ever Atlantic 10 Conference matches at Halton Arena this weekend. Temple, the only team picked ahead of Charlotte in the East Division in the preseason A-10 coaches' poll, visits Halton on Friday night (7:00). Charlotte battles La Salle on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
