Charlotte Volleyball Improves to 12-4 with 3-0 Defeat of William & Mary

Charlotte, NC - The Charlotte volleyball team improved to 12-4 with a 3-0 (30-26, 30-26, 30-20) defeat of William & Mary on Sunday afternoon at Halton Arena.

Abbey Szlanfucht, Jessica Oldenburg, and Lisa Newell combined for 41 of their team's 53 kills to lead the 49ers, who continue to improve upon their best start in four-plus seasons under head coach Lisa Marston. Charlotte won all three of its matches this week.

Szlanfucht, the team's leader in kills per game this season, posted 16 kills and 13 digs in the match. Oldenburg hit .524 on the day, registering 12 kills and seven digs. Newell, a middle blocker, added 13 kills and hit .500 against the Tribe.

William & Mary (9-5) was held to just .109 hitting in the match, and no player recorded over nine kills. Libero Erin Simmons tied a match-high with 15 digs on the defensive side for the Tribe, which saw a five-match winning streak come to an end.

Freshman Alma Arroyo posted eight kills and established a career high with 15 digs for Charlotte, which opens Conference USA play on Friday, October 1.

The 49ers host Elon on Tuesday night in their final non-league tune up before starting Conference USA play. The match begins at 7:00 pm in Halton Arena. Admission is $5 for adults, while youth (17 & under) and 49er students with valid ID are admitted free of charge.
