Volleyball Team Takes Winthrop In Four, 3-1

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The 49ers' volleyball team took a break from their conference schedule Tuesday, posting a 3-1 win over Winthrop at Halton Arena. Esra Akgun led Charlotte to the win, hitting .500 with 21 kills on 40 attacks.

The teams played each other close through three games with neither team winning by more than four points. Charlotte (6-7 overall, 1-2 C-USA) took the first game, 15-13, on a service ace from Ozlem Ozkan Ayture.

Winthrop (8-4 overall, 0-0 Big South) bounced back to win the second game, 15-11. Jennifer Pritchard and Sarah Brown knocked down five kills each for the Eagles.

The 49ers retook control in the third game, winning 15-11. Ayture, Akgun and Christy Galvin all had service aces for the Niners, while Chanda Waller tallied four kills.

Charlotte opened things up in the fourth game, rolling to a 15-1 win. The 49ers clinched the match on one of the Eagles' eight attack errors.

Charlotte's next match is this Thursday, when they take on C-USA opponent Houston at 7:00 in Halton Arena. Admission is $3 for adults. Youth and students will be admitted free.
