Charlotte Outlasts North Carolina A&T

Niners win tough-fought, five game match.

Sept. 24, 2004

Box Score

Greensboro, NC - Charlotte volleyball outlasted North Carolina A&T to come away with a five game victory on Friday night at the Corbett Sports Center. The 49ers prevailed by scores of 29-31, 30-24, 33-31, 25-30 and 15-10.

"It was a rough match. We came out really, really slow, very nonchalant," said head coach Lisa Marston, whose team improved to 11-4 with the victory. "They're a very, very athletic and emotional team, really aggressive and came right at us. Each game was a big-time struggle.

The slow start cost Charlotte the opening game, as A&T surprised with a 31-29 win. The Niners recovered nicely to win game two easily, and were in position to close out the match after winning game three. However they dropped the fourth game to the Aggies, setting up Charlotte to play in the fifth game for only the second time this season.

"In the fifth game, we got really aggressive finally, especially the last five points," Marston continued. "I definitely think that A&T outperformed us tonight, and I have to hand it to their team. We just happened to come out with the win, and we made the right plays at the end of the match. We couldn't set Lisa Newell enough, because of her ball control. She had a really great match, and so did Abbey (Szlanfucht)."

Szlanfucht tallied a match-high 24 kills, adding 10 digs and three service aces, to pace the Charlotte attack. Newell continued her hot hitting, recording 14 kills and hitting .346 in the match, while adding three aces and three block assists.

Jessica Oldenburg, the team's leading server, added another five aces in the match. She ranks among the NCAA leaders in that category this season. Freshman Alma Arroyo matched her teammate with five of her own, as the Niners served up 20 aces total.

North Carolina A&T fell to 3-9 overall despite 20 kills from Arlene Mitchell.

The 49ers return home to Halton Arena on Sunday, when they square off against the Tribe of William & Mary in a 2 pm match. Admission for adults is $5, while youth (17 & under) and Charlotte 49er students with valid ID are admitted free of charge.
