Cincinnati - A night after winning their first-ever Atlantic 10 match, the Charlotte 49ers volleyball team came up a bit short against conference foe Xavier. The Musketeers took a 3-1 (30-22, 29-31, 30-25, 30-26) decision on Saturday night at Cintas Center.
Charlotte (6-10, 1-1 A-10) leaves Ohio with a split on its first-ever Atlantic 10 road trip. On Friday night the 49ers downed defending champion Dayton, 3-2.
Due to the A-10's new divisional structure, Charlotte will play these West Division teams just once this season.
Leading the way for the Niners on Saturday night was again sophomore Alma Arroyo, who had 17 kills and 13 digs while adding five blocks. Abbey Szlanfucht contributed 13 kills, 13 digs and a pair of aces.
Lisa Newell and Jessica Oldenburg each chipped in with 11 kills. Setter Eden Ramos had her first career double-double with 47 assists and 11 digs, while Carly Romberg led the team with 15 digs.
The 49ers committed 34 hitting errors and missed on their serves eight times in the match, something head coach Lisa Marston pointed out following the match.
"We didn't execute very well," said Marston. "They run a very effective and fast offense. They had a great crowd, but we just didn't execute. We missed our serve at very key times, which was a little bit of lack of focus. But overall it was a very good weekend, so we'll go on and get ready for Elon, Temple and La Salle next week."
Xavier moved to 9-5 overall and 2-0 in Atlantic 10 play with the victory. The Musketeers swept George Washington on Friday night for their first win in A-10 play.
