CINCINNATI - With three players in double figures for kills and 11 blocks as a team, Cincinnati defeated Chatlotte in volleyball, 3-0, Saturday night at the Shoemaker Center.
The 49ers looked like they were going to make a run at knocking off the Bearcats in the first game, sprinting to a 4-0 advantage and building a 12-6 lead when Esra Akgun and Lexy Pool teamed up on a block. Cincinnati (10-4, 3-0 C-USA) rallied, however, outscoring the Niners 9-1 to win, 15-13.
The second game was nearly a complete opposite of the first. After jumping out to a sizable 9-0 lead, Charlotte (5-7, 1-2 C-USA) came back to pull within a point on two occasions. The 49ers cut the deficit to one on a Chanda Waller kill at 12-11, then on a Bearcat attack error at 13-12, before falling 15-12.
Cincinnati clinched the match in the third game. Kills from Jessica Kelly and Ashley Ferris held off the Bearcats late, but Cincinnati went on to win, 15-3.
Akgun led Charlotte in kills for the second straight night, knocking down 14. Bonita Wise led Cincinnati with 12 kills and six block assists.
