LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Hitting .356 as a team, Louisville defeated Charlotte's volleyball team, 3-0, Friday night at Cardinal Arena. It was the 49ers' first conference loss and the Cardinals' first conference win of the season.
Louisville (7-4 overall, 1-1 C-USA) quickly took a 2-0 advantage in the match, winning game one, 15-2, and game two, 15-6. In the second game, Charlotte (5-6 overall, 1-1 C-USA) tried to rally late, using a kill from Esra Akgun to pull within four at 10-6. The 49ers challenged the Cardinals in the third game. After taking a 3-0 lead on a block from Kathleen Ramos and Jessica Kelly, Louisville battled back to take the lead. Laura Darnell tied the game at eight each for Charlotte with a service ace, but Louisville went on to outscore the Niners 7-2 and clinch the match with a 15-10 win.
Akgun led the 49ers with 15 kills. Christy Galvin also reached double figures in kills with 10. Lesley Drury led Louisville with 11 kills.
