49ers Skewer Musketeers To Win SpringHill Suites Classic

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers volleyball team won the SpringHill Suites Classic Saturday night, beating Xavier, 3-1, in the championship match. With the victory, the 49ers placed Courtney Burg, Holly Kreyling and Lisa Newell on the all-tournament team. Burg was named the tournament's MVP.
"It's great to be home again and pick up three wins in a weekend," head coach Lisa Marston said. "The win against Xavier is especially nice. They are a very good team. They put a lot of pressure on us, but we stayed composed, agressive and finished."
Burg posted 18 kills and 15 digs to lead Charlotte (8-5) to the win. For the tournament, she registered 45 kills and 32 digs in the three matches. She was one of three 49ers to post a double-double Saturday night. Kreyling knocked down 13 kills and had 11 digs, while Abbey Szlanfucht racked up 12 kills and 15 digs. Newell, who earned her fourth all-tournament nod of the season, finished the night with eight kills and six digs.
"All of our kids played hard tonight," Marston said. "Courtney did a great job for us and performed well in all three matches. Holly was really solid all three matches. She swung very hard all weekend and was a great on-court leader. And Lisa Newell's fourth all-tournament award is great for her as well as the program."
Xavier (8-5) was led by Maggie Hoffman and Katey Wygant. Hoffman finished with 14 kills and 18 digs, while Wygant tallied 12 kills and 13 digs.
Entering the championship undefeated, both teams challenged the other throughout. The Musketeers got on the board first, winning game one 30-22. The 49ers picked up the gauntlet, answering with a strong 30-19 victory in the second game to tie the match. The third game proved to be the tightest as both teams took turns in the lead before the Niners came out with a 33-31 victory. In control, Charlotte finished off Xavier in the fourth game, clinching the title with a 30-27 win.

The 49ers return to action Tuesday, when they host North Carolina at 7:00 in Halton Arena.
