MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Charlotte 49ers volleyball team opened their weekend at Minnesota's Diet Coke Invitational with a loss, falling to Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 3-0. On Saturday, the team takes on Colorado State and No. 22 Minnesota.
Sarah Potts paced Wisconsin-Milwaukee (10-1) with 21.5 points on 21 kills and a block assist. She also had 10 digs to post a double-double. Karen Fruit also reached double digits in kills and digs, logging 10 kills and 18 digs.
Abbey Szlanfucht and Lisa Newell each scored in double figures for Charlotte (5-7). Szlanfucht led the team with 15 points, posting 13 kills, a serice ace and two blocks assists. Newell finished the night with 10.5 points. She finished with seven kills, an ace, a solo block and assisted on three blocks.
The 49ers kept things close in the first two games, but fell behind 2-0 after 30-23 and 30-24 losses. The opposition buckled down in the final game, cruising to a 30-12 win to clinch the match.
"I was pleased with how we played in the first two games," head coach Lisa Marston said. "We had too many errors and you simply cannot do that against top-level competition. The atmosphere here is terrific. Of the other teams, Minnesota is ranked and Colorado State is receiving votes. The tough competition will help to prepare us for conference play."
