Sacramento, Calif. - The Charlotte volleyball team split a pair of matches at the Sacramento State Invitational on Saturday, losing to San Jose State 3-0 (30-21, 30-24, 30-23) in their final match at the Hornets Nest. The 49ers defeated Seton Hall by a 3-0 score earlier in the day, and finished the event in fourth place with a 1-3 record.
San Jose State improves to 8-3 overall, and finished the tournament in second place with a 3-1 record. Carrie Nash had a match-high 17 kills and hit .400 to lead the Spartans to victory.
SJSU held Charlotte (9-4 overall) to just a .044 hitting percentage for the match, including 33 hitting errors. Lisa Newell managed 14 kills to lead the 49ers, while Jessica Oldenburg added ten. Freshman Cori Dayton served up four aces for Charlotte.
Newell, who was the MVP of last weekend's SpringHill Suites Classic, earned her second All-Tournament honor of the season. For the four-match event, she led the team with 3.46 kills and 1.15 blocks per game (15 total). Newell also had the highest hitting percentage among the team's hitters (.376).
Charlotte plays at Gardner-Webb on Wednesday, Sept. 22 at 7:00 pm.
