Sacramento, Calif. - Sacramento, Calif. -- Sophomore Millicent Martin set a new a career-high with 12 kills to help pace the Charlotte 49ers volleyball team to a 3-0 (30-22, 30-27, 30-16) victory over Seton Hall in the second round of the Sacramento State Invitational on Saturday at the Hornets Nest.
Martin, whose previous career high had been eight kills, hit .346 in the match and added nine digs for the 49ers. Charlotte improved to 9-3 overall with the victory, which puts the team at 1-2 for the tournament.
Abbey Szlanfucht failed to reach a double-figure total in kills for the first time in the tournament, but found other ways to contribute to the win. Szlanfucht shattered her personal record for service aces with eight, and tacked on a match-high 15 digs.
No player reached nine kills for the Pirates, who fall to 3-8 overall and 0-3 in the tournament with the loss. As a team, Seton Hall hit just .126 on the day, including percentages under .100 in the second and third games.
Lisa Newell, who earned MVP honors at last weekend's tournament, continues to play well for Charlotte, tallying 12 kills on just 19 attempts from her middle position. Fellow middle blocker Jessica Oldenburg was the third 49er to reach 12 kills, adding five digs and five block assists.
Lynae Mulder totaled five kills and six block assists for Charlotte, which plays in the tournament's final game tonight, at 8 pm EST, versus San Jose State.
